Gerry Sharkey worked in the IDA for 32 years and during that time held Senior Management positions across a wide area of business sectors in which the IDA is involved, including Financial Services, Engineering and Consumer Products, International Services, Consumer Foods and SME development. From 2010-2011, he headed up a new Growth Markets division which was established to deliver business from the BRIC countries and other growth markets throughout the world.
In the 1990s he spent 6 years in Silicon Valley, working out of San Jose with responsibility for the ICT sector and during that time major projects from Microsoft, Oracle, Xilinx, AOL, HP and IBM were delivered to Ireland. All of these businesses have expanded their operations significantly since their initial investments.
From 2003 to 2008 he was Director of IDA’s Northern European region, based in London and was responsible for delivery of business in Financial Services in Banking, Insurance and Investment Management. During his time in London he set up IDA’s first office in India in Mumbai in 2008. He was responsible for recruiting staff, developing a marketing and branding programme for IDA in the region, and integrating the new office into IDA’s tracking and CRM system.
In 2000 he was seconded from the IDA to the OECD for a year to advise on development of Foreign Direct Investment Programmes in Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey. This has led to developing a good understanding on the issues, both positive and negative, which affect the various countries in the region and how programmes could be developed to address the key negative issues.
