John O'Brien (BA, MA) was previously a member of the executive committee of IDA Ireland with responsibility for Business Strategy and Stakeholder Relations. He was responsible for government liaison and in particular for progressing proposals to enhance the investment climate in areas such as: business and personal taxation, utility costs, infrastructure provision and policy on research and innovation. John drove the Strategic Planning process that produced the current IDA strategy Horizon 2020 and oversaw its successful implementation;
From 2010 to 2012 John was Company Secretary of IDA Ireland with responsibility for Corporate Governance, Strategic Planning, Finance, Corporate Services, EU and Tax. From 2008 to 2010, John was a Member of the IDA Ireland Executive Committee with responsibility for Regional Development, Strategic Planning and EU & Tax. From 1999 to 2007 he was Economic Adviser to the Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Ministers for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Health and Justice;
Prior to that appointment he was head of the Enterprise Policy Department of Forfas (the government advisory board on industry and technology) which inter alia provided analytical support to the National Competitiveness Council.
